(Dec. 4, 2004) Miss Peru, Maria Julia Mantilla Garcia, was crowned Miss World 2004 on Saturday in China.

Mantilla Garcia, 20, beat Claudia Julissa Cruz-Rodriguez, 18, from the Dominican Republic and Nancy Randall, 24, from the United States to take the crown. Contestants from 107 countries participated in the pageant.

Mantilla Garcia replaces the former winner, Miss Ireland Rosanna Davison, daughter of "Lady in Red" pop crooner Chris de Burgh.

Maria Julia was born in Trujillo, a city on the north coast of Peru. She is currently studying to become a high school teacher, but also plans to start a second career in tourism in order to help promote the interesting places of her hometown, which has the biggest archaeological monument on the coast of Peru, Chan Chan, a city made of sand.

Three years ago, Maria Julia was a national triathlon and pentathlon champion. She considers it important to combine intellectual affairs with sports as it is the only way to have balance. In her leisure time, Maria Julia enjoys painting, watching movies, sport and dancing. She is a professional in the typical local dance, The Marinera. Her personal motto is "My family is my strength."
