Honor to the fallen Peruvians

Camminati Aldo (left) was born in Lima on Jan. 20,  1971. He graduated from the University Ricardo Palma in 2003. He arrived in the U.S. and entered the Navy the same year.

At the moment, he is serving in Ramadi, a city near Baghdad, Iraq. Earlier, he was in Falluja. While he is serving, other Peruvians have lost their lives in Iraq.

Alexander Manrique was born in Callao, Wilfredo Urbina was born in Lima, the family of Andrew Avilés is from Cusco and Richard Towers, although he was born in United States, his family roots are in Lince.

These four men of uniform had much in common: a bulletproof idealist, immense gratitude by a new mother country and to distant Peru.

"My brother gave his life in defense of the democracy, thanks to him I can be here speaking and I desire to preserve his memory," says Stewart Towers, brother of the Army Lt. Richard Towers.

Richard wanted to be lawyer, but on Sept. 11, 2001, his plan changed: it would be to fight for the country that gave everything to him. On Oct. 6, 2003, he became the first Peruvian-American fallen in Iraq.

Janet Urbina, meanwhile, cannot contain the tears. On Nov. 29, 2004, her son, Wilfredo, 29, (right) a specialist in the National Guard, also fell in Iraq. He and four others were riding in a Humvee outside of Baghdad when a insurgent bomb blew it apart. After the 2001 terrorist bombings, he helped save lives at the World Trade Center.

Peruvians and Peruvian-Americans are proud of those that serve the country. At the U.S. Embassy in Lima, a ceremony was held on Oct. 7 to honor the fallen.
