Castaneda has successful experience in administrating many private and government institutions in Peru.
The governor has many current projects that are helping to transform Lima into a city of the 21st Century.
Downtown Lima was once in chaos, with informal businesses that took over the streets and sidewalks to sell their goods. Castaneda has moved them to two open markets that he created, Polvos Azules and Amazons. Now, downtown Lima is free of the street businesses and the Plaza Mayor is one of the city's main tourist attractions. Another of his projects was an extensive illumination of
the entire plaza, now an impressive sight during night hours.
Another daily headache in Lima -- the traffic -- is also being addressed by the governor. Castaneda is very creative and has modern ideas. He has created a metropolitan transport system plan that includes a modern grand central station and highways that will unite all areas of Lima.
Another finished project is the historic Lima Wall, which is part of the Acho corridor tourist circuit. In that renovated area, 5,700 square meters of infrastructure were improved.
He also remodeled 40 blocks of Canada Avenue, widening it to six lanes and creating 21 bus stops. The traffic lights along the street have been electronically coordinated.
He has said many times that he won't settle for poverty in the region. For example, Villa el Salvador, a shanty town, will benefit from one of his projects. A bypass for Mateo Pumacahua Avenue and the Pan American Highway is almost finished..
The governor has also constructed sports complexes in many shanty town areas of Lima.
The Lima metro area has 23 projects launched by the governor, and 50 percent of them are underway.
On Jan. 1, 2005, Castaneda had served half of his four-year term. His focus on improving the daily life in Lima has won him widespread support across the city and the entire country. Political polls are now showing him as an early favorite in the next presidential campaign. |
