U.S. Warns Americans in Peru
April 19, 2002
LIMA, Peru - The State Department warned that Peru's Shining Path could be
planning attacks against Americans around the May 17 anniversary of the
guerrilla group's insurgency.
"There are indications that terrorist organizations are continuing to plan
actions directed against American citizens and American interests in Peru,"
said a department statement published Friday.
"These organizations are known to plan activities on or around
significant anniversary dates for these groups in May," it said.
Officials advised Americans to avoid crowds and public areas, especially
where Americans often congregate.
The advisory specifically mentioned Sendero Luminoso, or the Shining Path, a
Maoist group suspected of being behind a car bombing last month near the U.S.
Embassy in Lima that killed nine people.
The Shining Path launched its insurgency on May 17, 1980, after a decade of
organizing its guerrilla war. For years until the mid-1990s, the rebels timed
some of their most violent attacks to commemorate the date.
