LIMA, Peru (AP) Three American mountain climbers were swept away by an
avalanche on Peru's highest peak and are feared dead, police said Tuesday.
Luis Garate, head of Peru's high-mountain rescue unit, said two other
climbing expeditions reported that they saw the Americans disappear in an
avalanche on Huascaran mountain Monday afternoon.
A police patrol was searching the mountain on foot Tuesday, Garate said.
Garate said a person buried in the snow could survive only for a few hours,
depending on their injuries and how they fell.
"To be honest, it's unlikely" that they are alive, he said.
He did not have the names of the climbers. A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy
in Lima said rescuers were searching Huascaran for three American whose
identities could not be immediately confirmed.
The avalanche happened in an area about 19,400 feet above sea level, Garate
said.
Huascaran, which soars to 22,334 feet, attracts climbers from around the
world.
