Canada, Andean countries to hold free trade talksAug. 7, 2002 OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada and the five members of the Andean Community will hold preliminary talks on a proposed free trade agreement, Canadian International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew said on Wednesday. Bilateral trade with the Andean Community members -- Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela -- reached C$3.6 billion ($2.3 billion) in 2001, with Canadian exports totaling C$1.5 billion, a statement from Pettigrew's office said. A spokesman said talks would start in the next few months. The government estimates cumulative Canadian investment in the Andean countries at C$11 billion. In the Americas, Canada already has free trade agreements with Chile and, through the North American Free Trade Agreement, with Mexico and the United States. ($1=$1.58 Canadian) |
