Peru's jailed former chief spy Vladimiro Montesinos, left, takes notes during his trial for media manipulation while co-defendant Moises Wolfenson, a tabloid newspaper owner, watches during a trial at the Navy base near Lima on Feb. 3.
A close-up of his notes, taken by television cameras in the court, indicated Montesinos was actually passing along a directive
for Wolfenson's newspaper, La Razon, right under the noses of judges, to run a front-page headline implicating President Alejandro Toledo in drug use. The story was on the newsstands the next day.
After hearing of the news, Toledo said in a public speech that he is declaring war against corruption. "Justice will prevail regardless who is involved," he said.
