Alzamora helped negotiate the Andean Trade Preferences Act, which gave various Andean nations improved access for their exports to the U.S. market.
Peru is setting up a negotiating team, which officials say could include up to 60 persons from various ministries, the Central Reserve Bank of Peru, Congress and the regional governments.
"The academic sector will help with 10 to 12 persons, and the private sector will participate with a large team. I calculate that it won't be less than 50 to 60 persons who could form part of the negotiating team," Trade and Tourism Minister Alfredo Ferrero said.
Talks aimed at the bilateral trade pact are expected to begin early this year.
The U.S. said in November that it planned to begin formal negotiations for free trade deals with several Latin American nations, including, among others, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador.
