Alan Garcia, who plans to run for president in Peru in 2006, was bombarded with eggs and rocks while campaigning in the southern province of Tacna. He was not injured in the attack.
Many Peruvians still remember the days when he was president in 1985. At that time, Garcia used to say that he was sticking up for the poor and the underprivileged, but when he had two million percent inflation during his watch, the poor were the worst to suffer. Inflation was 87.7% in 1985 and 7,649% in 1990. By draining the government of its income and reserves, he left the next
government (Alberto Fujimori) with no option but to seek help from the IMF, World Bank and the international financial community.
Many whispered reports in his presidency claimed that Garcia had undergone a "sleep" treatment a few years earlier for a nervous condition. The reports claimed he had taken lithium. Reports at the time said that Garcia's political enemies suspected that Garcia was crazy. His nickname was Caballo Loco (Crazy Horse). Now, looking back, it seems clear that his frantic lifestyle
and sudden withdrawals betrayed his condition. Garcia was apparently bipolar or manic depressive, which may explain his erratic behavior.
Many Peruvians who remember the earlier Garcia era don't want to see him back in office again.
