From her residence and place where she produces her show, "Laura," she explained that the Peruvian justice system couldn't find evidence on the delinquency charges against her. She is accused of receiving US$3 million from former chief spy Vladimiro Montesinos to support former President Fujimori's regime via her show on Peruvian Channel 4.
She was unable to speak to the public based on a previous ruling, but this week ended the ruling for it. She called for a press conference to speak about her case. The press conference attracted a big crowd of Peruvian and international news reporters.
Laura explained that for 22 months she has been accused of many ties to the Fujimori regime and Montesinos. She acknowledged that she made the mistake of supporting the regime during Fujimori's last years in power and she asked for forgiveness from the Peruvian people.
"Until now, there is no proof to support the charges. I never received any monies. My lips were never on sale. I made mistakes. I supported what I shouldn't. I had friendships that I am ashamed of, but I never sold myself," she said.
Fujimori has been a Japanese refugee since November 2001 and former spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos is in jail at the navy base in Callao. Laura denies that she ever maintained a close relationship with Montesinos.
Laura explained that she has trust in her defense, especially with proof like the bank statements of herself, her father, her boyfriend and her business.
She ended the press conference by explaining her desire to cooperate with the justice system.
"I don't criticize the system because everybody that stole from the country must assume the consequences and be sentenced," she added.
