Holy Week in Peru

Holy Week in Peru is filled with rich traditions and emotions. Many Andean cities recreate the entire experience with processions of the statues of  John, Francis, Jesus and Mary. Each procession goes separately within the cities on its own route and with their own faithful followers.  The Holy Week agenda entails encounters and rituals between two of the statues and their followerers. Participants holding a candle in their hands make long lines of people on each side of the procession. They sometimes spend an entire night walking and praying.

Cities like Ayacucho, Cuzco, Huaraz, Chiquian, and Tarma are visited by tourists who want to join these experiences. Perhaps the most famous Holy Week celebrations occur in Ayacucho, where the entire town participates in the event. Seas of people praying and many crying follow the processions day and night.  During day time and when no processions are scheduled, groups of people gather around the main plazas for large parties.

Some statue pedestals contain thousands of candles and the sight at night is very impressive and touching.
