Puno region celebrates Mamacha festivities

The Puno region is ready to celebrate "Mamacha" (Virgin Mary) festivities for 15 days. Both Christianity and the devil are portrayed in many dances from different towns in the Puno region.

During the 40th annual festivities, there will be dance and wardrobe contests for dances like Chacareros, Llameritos, Kajelos, Wifalas,  Morenadas, Diabladas, Llameradas, Kullahuadas, Waca Wacas and others. Thirty thousand tourists will arrive in the region to enjoy the festivities. Spectacular processions of the Virgin Mary as well as ingenious displays of fireworks will be part of the festivities.

The Feb. 1-15 festival is considered one of the three most famous carnival celebrations in Latin America. The carnival of Rio de Janeiro and the carnival of Oruro (Brazil) are the others.

The streets of Puno were recently flooded during bad weather, but they will be full of tourists drinking thousands of bottles of beer and other drinks. "Mamacha Candelaria" is aware of the weakness of her children and will welcome all without discrimination..
