Although only five of the 18 rounds of matches have been played, public pressure has started to mount for the removal of Peru coach Paulo Autuori.
Autuori, credited with putting Peruvian soccer back on its feet after years in the doldrums, woke up to a less-than-friendly reaction on Thursday after his team’s meek home loss. In a stinging attack on Autuori and Bayern Munich striker Claudio Pizarro, the country's vice-president David Waisman demanded that
the Brazilian coach resign.
“There was no technical planning and I hope that Autuori resigns this very day; and not just him but his whole technical commission,” Waisman told CPN radio. “The national team's performance was degenerating and disappointing. I respect and admire Pizarro, but here he plays with his back to goal. He may be brilliant and
scores goals in Europe, but here he's no good, he doesn't fit in with the Peruvian game.”
Colombia had first-half goals by Freddy Grisales and Frankie Oviedo. Grisales volleyed home from close range in the 29th minute after Luis Amaranto Perea broke down the right and the Peruvian defense failed to clear his cross.
Oviedo rose between two defenders to score three minutes before halftime after Elkin Murillo had evaded his on the left and delivered a perfect cross.
Peru's Andres Mendoza had a near-miss in the 22nd minute. The unmarked Belgian-based striker miscued as the ball fell invitingly to him near the penalty spot.
Peru played without injured midfielder Nolbert Solano, who scored the tying goal in a 1-1 draw with Brazil. The star of England's Newcastle hurt his right ankle and was replaced by Henry Quinteros.
Other results on Wednesday: Venezuela took a 3-0 win over host Uruguay; five-time World Cup champion Brazil was held to a 0-0 draw with Paraguay; two-time Cup champion Argentina beat Ecuador 1-0; and Chile bounced back from a two-game losing streak to shut out Bolivia 2-0.
Argentina leads the 10-team group with 11 points, followed by Paraguay with 10 and Brazil and Venezuela with nine each. Peru is in seventh place with five points. The top four teams earn slots for the 2006 World Cup finals, while the fifth place team advances to a playoff with a team from a different region.
