Peruvian beach host Latin American surfing championship

by

Katie Vasquez

Peruvian surfer Sofia Mulanovich performs during the championship.

Peru is a place were surfers from around the world gather to experience a different kind of waves (the so-called "left waves") in beautiful beaches that are appreciated by experienced surfers. This year, Peru is the organizer of the Latin American championships. The championship was held on Pulpos (Octopus) Beach near Lima. Pulpos Beach is frequented by local surfers and  is known for its fast waves. The best waves in this area occur during the night.

On Feb. 14, 2004, Pulpos was lit by big lights to accommodate the championship. Surfers for Costa Rica, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Peru and other Latin American countries went to the sea searching for the perfect wave to compete.

Argentine surfer Martin Paseri performs during the championship.

Costa Rica's Luis Vindas won the Quiksilver Latin Pro Ripley surf award and Peru's Gabriel Aramburú  won the overall competition. The overall competition included tournaments in "Punta Roquitas" (rock points) and "Senoritas" beaches.
