Ouch! Peru settles for tie with Venezuela

By Jeff Dugan

Peruvian soccer player Jorge Soto (left) and Venezuelan Gabriel Urdaneta fight for the ball during Sunday's match at National Stadium in Lima. The teams battled to a 0-0 tie.

Peru and Venezuela fought to a 0-0 draw Sunday in a World Cup qualifying match before a packed house at National Stadium in Lima.

Peru opened strong with Aston Villa's Nolberto Solano and Alianza Lima's Jefferson Farfan working the ball up the sides. But the Peruvian squad was unable to find the net and missed several chances.

Peru captain Claudio Pizarro, of Bayern Munich, missed the match after he pulled his left calf in Peru's 3-1 victory over Uruguay last week.

Peru now has nine points from seven matches in the 10-team qualifying group, while Venezuela has 10. Only the top four teams qualify directly for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. The fifth-place team will face either Australia or the Solomon Islands in a two-leg playoff for another spot.

Next up for Peru is a home match with Argentina in early September.
